Asbestos Notice
District Patrons:
In 1986, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). In the past, asbestos was used extensively in building materials because of its insulating and fire-retardant capabilities. Virtually any building built before the late 1970’s contains at least some asbestos. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began action to limit uses of asbestos products in 1973, and most use of asbestos products as building materials was banned in 1978.
The AHERA law requires all schools, kindergarten through twelfth grade, to be inspected every 3 years to identify any asbestos-containing building materials. The law further requires the development of a Management Plan that is based upon the finds of the certified inspection and to outline our intent to control the potential for exposure to asbestos fibers in our school.
The Blue Springs School District is in full government compliance. Our inspection took place in October 2019. Our tri-annual re-inspection will take place in 2022. We are intent on not only complying with, but exceeding federal, state, and local regulations in this area. We plan to take whatever steps are necessary to insure your children and our employees have a healthy, safe environment in which to learn and work.
A copy of the AHERA Management Plan is on file in all Blue Springs School District school’s front offices and in the Director of Buildings and Grounds Office located at 5395 W 40 Hwy, Blue Springs, MO for your review during regular office hours.
Sincerely,
Seth Shippy
