Family and Consumer Science Courses

    Family Relations is a class for Juniors and Seniors.  Students enrolled in Family Relations focus on analyzing the significance of the family; analyzing identifying factors that build and maintain healthy family relationships; developing communication patterns that enhance family relationships; dealing effectively with family stressors and conflicts; managing work and family roles and responsibilities; analyzing social forces and conditions that influence families across the life span; and cultivating the safety and well-being of the family.  Membership and participation in FCCLA, a student organization to promote Family and Consumer Sciences, is encouraged.
     

Culinary Courses

    This is an introductory course in basic nutrition that will cover the following topics:  safety and sanitation in the kitchen, kitchen management, basic food preparation, and the six essential nutrients (Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, and Water). This course involves a variety of classroom techniques as well as laboratory experience.  Membership and participation in FCCLA, a student organization to promote Family and Consumer Sciences, is encouraged.

    Credit Type: Practical Art
    Prerequisite: Nutrition & Wellness

    Students will learn the fundamentals of baking and pastries.  Theory and hands-on lab work will support the students’ understanding of this art and science. This course is intended to give the student an understanding of the components of various bread, cookie, and pastry preparation techniques.  This could include leavening agents, muffins and quick breads, yeast breads, cookie mixing methods, pies, artisan breads, chocolates, and cakes.  Group work is expected through various projects.  Student work also has the potential to be displayed at the Cat’s Corner.

    Students in this course will learn about advanced cooking methods and food preparation techniques, cultural and geographical influences on food habits, and food staples and cuisines of regional Europe, Africa, Latin America, Russia, and Asia.  Membership and participation in FCCLA, a student organization to promote Family and Consumer Sciences, is encouraged.
     

Early Childhood Courses

    Credit Type: Practical Art

    This course is intended for those who take seriously the responsibility of parenthood and/or plan to work in a child-related profession.  Emphasis is on parenting skills, teenage pregnancy, childbirth, prenatal and postnatal care of infants, developmental patterns of children, and the effects of heredity and environment.  Child safety, child abuse, career opportunities, and other related topics to the developing child will be discussed.  Membership and participation in FCCLA, a student organization to promote Family and Consumer Sciences, is encouraged.

    Course content will include childcare and development concepts that have significance for those who are interested in working in a childcare occupation or other child-related profession, as well as for potential parents.  An actual preschool situation will be provided.  Emphasis will be on early childhood education.  Students will be responsible for children aged three to five.  Students are required to teach the preschoolers and evaluate the progress of a preschooler in the class.  Active participation will also be required of students.  Membership and participation in FCCLA, a student organization to promote Family and Consumer Sciences, is encouraged.

    Fee: ~$198 Will be Billed/Paid Through the Cooperating College Business Office
    Prerequisite: Must have completed Early Childhood Education with a grade of C or better
    Industry Recognized Credential (IRC): AAFCS Early Childhood Education

    Course content will include childcare and development concepts that have significance for those who are interested in working in a childcare occupation or other child-related profession, as well as for potential parents.  An actual preschool situation will be provided.  Emphasis will be on early childhood education.  Students will be responsible for children aged three to five.  Students are required to teach the preschoolers and prepare a teaching portfolio.  Active participation will also be required of students.  Course content will be parallel to CDF 1230 as taught at the University of Central Missouri.  Membership and participation in FCCLA, a student organization to promote Family and Consumer Sciences, is encouraged.  One (1) honor point will be earned for successful completion of this class.  Two (2) hours of dual credit available through UCM.
     

     

Apparel, Textiles, and Design Courses

    This course is designed for the student interested in a career in fashion apparel, textiles, or interior design.  In this course students will obtain a foundation and the knowledge needed for more advanced studies of fashion apparel, textiles, or interior design.  Students will cover the basics of the physical, psychological, social, and cultural reasons for how we dress and where we live, the elements and principles of design, textiles, fabric construction and selection for apparel and home use, introductory sewing skills that are applied in a variety of samples and apparel or home goods projects.  Self-initiative, motivation, time management, planning, independent work, following directions and evaluating are crucial skills in this course where art, communication, mathematics, science, and technology are applied.  Students are responsible for sewing supplies and fabric for construction projects, which may cost from $75 and up, depending on the project selected.  Membership and participation in FCCLA, a student organization to promote Family and Consumer Science is encouraged.

    Prerequisite: Fashion and Interior Design 

    This course develops a more advanced knowledge and application of sewing skills.  It is designed for the student interested in a career in fashion apparel, accessory design, costume design, interior design and more.  This course utilizes more advanced garment construction techniques, basic pattern making/draping and an expansion of applied textiles knowledge.  Several garments and skills examples will be constructed during the semester.  Successful completion of this class provides students with an understanding of textile application and construction with an emphasis on quality.  Self-initiative, motivation, time management, planning, independent work, following directions, and evaluating are crucial skills in this course in which art, communication, mathematics, science, and technology are applied.  Students are responsible for sewing supplies and fabric for construction projects, which may cost from $75 and up, depending on projects selected.

    This course develops a more advanced knowledge and application of interior design skills.  Projects on the following may be explored:  housing/furniture styles, design and architecture, hand drawn floor plans, computer-aided design (CAD), remodeling and career related occupations.  Self-initiative, motivation, time management, planning, independent work, following directions and evaluating are crucial skills in this course which art, communication, mathematics, science, and technology are applied.  Membership and participation in FCCLA, a student organization to promote Family and Consumer Science, is encouraged.

    This course is designed to provide the student with knowledge of the various creative and business functions of the fashion and home goods industries.  Students learn the dynamics of the industry including trending, textiles, designers, the design process, production, promotion, and visual merchandising.  Students will develop a collection of apparel or home goods by utilizing croquis sketching and/or apparel/home good construction techniques, basic pattern making/draping and an expansion of applied textiles knowledge.  Self-initiative, motivation, time management, planning, independent work, following directions and evaluating are crucial skills in this course in which art, communication, mathematics, science, and technology are applied.  Students are responsible for sewing supplies and fabric for construction projects, which may cost from $75 and up, depending on projects selected.  Membership and participation in FCCLA, a student organization to promote Family and Consumer Science, is encouraged.
