This course is designed to introduce students to basic accounting concepts and to allow students to explore accounting and related career opportunities. Students will complete accounting cycles for a service-based sole proprietorship. Students will also be introduced to automated accounting systems and will complete accounting projects. Recommended for students planning to study business or accounting in college.

Prerequisite: Dual Credit Requirements if taking for Dual CreditThis course is designed for students preparing for a career in business and explores the American free enterprise system. It is a broad introduction to the various fields of business and communication skills needed to be successful in business careers. Topics covered will include business trends, economics, entrepreneurship, management, human resources, and marketing. Students will produce and/or be exposed to a variety of business correspondence, as well as learn how to create formal presentations. One (1) honor point will be earned for each semester successfully completed. Three (3) hours of dual credit through UMKC, if enrollment criteria are met. There is an option to take Supervised Business Work Experience for credit, which is considered work release for partial day.

Location: Career and Innovation CenterStudents learn the application of the basic accounting equations and more advanced accounting principles including inventories, depreciation, and asset management. Textbooks, homework, quizzes, and tests will all be completed online through MOState Canvas. This course is recommended for college-bound students who plan to major in any business-related field. One (1) honor point will be earned if successfully completed. Three (3) hours dual credit through MSU is required if enrollment criteria are met.
This semester long course meets for 1 period each day.

They will study banking, budgeting, investing, credit card use, insurance, and home and automobile purchases. Possible job skills that may be assigned are resume and cover letter building, interview prep skills, and workplace readiness activities. This course is required for graduation by the State of Missouri as well as the Blue Springs School District. 20% of the grade is assigned through MSU coursework. Three (3) hours of dual credit is available through MSU, if the college’s criteria are met.

Students may receive assistance from the instructor in finding an approved job. Students must also be enrolled in Business Principles (HS0934) and must pass the class in order to earn credit for Work Release. For Work Release students to be eligible for half-day release from school, the student must be able to show a W-4 on file with their place of work. Students must complete a minimum of 10 hours per week on the job. Students can receive ½ credit per semester with 10-19 hours of paid work on average or receive 1 credit per semester with 20+ hours on average. Students forfeit their eligibility for the 8th semester attendance option.

These experiential learning components will give structure and motivation for students to see outcomes from their actions and give them internship experience for their future. With the right mindset in place, these students will be influential in creating a future hub of synergy, collaboration, and creative ventures from other school-wide programs and clubs throughout the year. Applications and interviews will be necessary to be approved for this class through the cooperating teacher(s). Recommended areas of expertise include marketing, entrepreneurship, graphic design, fashion merchandising, interior design, culinary, and photography.

Prerequisite: Students are Required to Participate in DECAIndividuals are embracing the entrepreneurial mindset today more than ever and understanding the freedom it offers to create their own wealth. Students’ hands-on experiences will include applying classroom concepts to a real business product or service. This course develops the ability to identify and evaluate new product opportunities and/or ideas for business concepts. Students will interact with successful entrepreneurs from different industries who will speak on their area of expertise. As a highly interactive class, significant weight will be placed on participation, and a formal business plan and presentation. Students are required to participate in DECA as a way to connect and compete with their business plan. Three (3) credit hours of dual credit available through UMKC.

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Marketing with C grade or better, DECA Membership and EngagementThe course focuses on higher level instruction in the areas of marketing mix, concepts, consumerism, market segmentation, market research, and the impacts of different competitive structures on marketing decision making. Students will apply their understanding of marketing concepts to real business situation case studies. Students may even gain real-world experience through marketing research and data analysis to create a personalized plan for the local business to use. Principles of project management will include high-order thinking, ethics, group dynamics, customer/employee motivation, communications, leadership, and management styles.
This course is recommended for college-bound students who plan to major in any business or marketing-related field. One (1) honor point will be earned if successfully completed. Three (3) hours of dual credit are available through MSU. DECA membership and engagement is required for this class.
