Celebrating Black History

BSSD students and staff took part in various activities throughout February in celebration of Black History Month. Among the highlights were Sunny Pointe Elementary students studying groundbreaking artist Alma Thomas. The first black female artist to have her works permanently displayed at the White House.
Paul Kinder Middle School students in Spanish Club and Diversity Club had the opportunity to learn about the stories of legendary black athletes during a visit to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
Students at Blue Springs South High School watched and discussed the film “The Great Debaters.” The film follows the trials and tribulations of the Wiley College debate team in 1935 Texas.
Blue Springs High School held its annual Black History Month program with speakers, music, and performances.
John Nowlin Elementary students studied influential leaders and created a giant game of Guess Who.
Students at Brittany Hill Middle School participated in weekly homeroom meetings and in engaging activities and games. Leaders at Moreland Ridge Middle School made daily announcements and created displays throughout the school to celebrate.
