    Credit Type: Fine Art

    This course builds a foundation of knowledge in art. The elements and principles of design are covered in depth and the students should leave Design Fundamentals class with a clear understanding of composition and color.  Students will be introduced to a variety of media with a strong emphasis in drawing and art criticism. This class is a prerequisite for all art classes except Art History and Introduction to Fine Arts.

    Students will survey principles of selected fine arts.  This course will comprise of rotations between selected fine arts disciplines which may include speech, debate, choir, art, theater, instrumental music, etc.

    Drawing I offers students an opportunity to focus specifically on improving drawing skills and expanding knowledge of composition.  Students will use a variety of drawing media.  Students will learn how to critique artwork in a group discussion setting.  This class is necessary for students interested in Painting I or Drawing II.

    Drawing II builds on basic drawing skills; students are allowed more freedom to experiment with all types of drawing media and subject matter.  Class critiques will be a large part of this class; students will become comfortable talking about other students’ work and their own work in a group setting.  This class is designed for students interested in pursuing an art degree after high school.

    This course will focus on expanding students’ drawing skills, focusing specifically on figure drawing, portraiture, color exploration, and incorporating texture into their artwork.

    This class provides an introduction to hand building and wheel thrown ceramics.  Students should have a strong understanding of the elements and principles of art and like to work with their hands.  Historical and present styles of ceramics will be explored.

    This class is a continuation of the clay methods learned in Ceramics I class.  Greater emphasis will be placed on problem solving and developing new ideas in clay mediums.  Students will have opportunities to mix glazes and experiment with various types of clay.

    Prerequisite: Must have completed Ceramics II with Teacher Recommendation

    This course will focus on expanding students’ Ceramics skills.  We will take skills from Ceramics II and develop them further by focusing specifically on hand building & wheel throwing while incorporating new decorating techniques into their artwork.  We will focus on both functional and sculptural ceramics.

    Recommended: Drawing II or currently enrolled in Drawing II

    Painting I focuses on the foundations of painting basics in acrylic, tempera, and watercolor.  Students should have strong drawing skills and an understanding of color and composition.

    Prerequisite: Painting I with C+ Grade or Higher

    Painting II focuses on expression and effective communications within painting mediums.  Students will work more independently.  Pieces completed need to be clean and interesting paintings.  This course goes beyond basic painting and is for the student interested in pursuing art after high school.  Strong skills in composition, drawing and art criticism are necessary.

    Painting III is a continuation of concepts taught in Painting I & Painting II.  Students will focus on advanced color theory, and incorporating the various elements and principles of design using a variety of subject matter.

    Photography I is a basic course in photography that includes photo history, basic camera functions, photo-taking techniques, subject selection, composition, and evaluation. Students may be required to furnish their own camera and supplies.

    Prerequisite: Photography I with C+ Grade or Higher

    Photography II is for students who have successfully completed Photo I and are interested in continuing their work on a more advanced level.  Projects will stress individual application of photo techniques and ideas.  Photographic artists and methods will also be studied.  Students will focus on developing a personal style of photo.  Students may be required to furnish their own camera and supplies.

    This course will focus on expanding students’ Photography skills, focusing specifically on portraiture, lighting, computer editing, and displaying of digital artwork.
