BSSD Adds Two New Sports

The Blue Springs School District is adding high school girls’ flag football and high school boys’ volleyball, beginning with the 2026-2027 school year. Both sports will be registered through the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) and take place during the spring season, with competition starting in March 2027.
The expansion comes in response to growing student and family interest and reflects BSSD’s continued commitment to providing a wide range of opportunities for students.
Boys’ volleyball was officially sanctioned by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHAA) in 2024. The sport is also recognized by the NCAA and is included in the Summer Olympic Games.
Girls’ flag football is recognized by MSHAA as an emerging sport. At the collegiate level, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) sanctioned women’s flag football, and the sport will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games.
The goal is to field Varsity and Junior Varsity teams in each sport based on student participation.
Blue Springs South High School Activities Director Jimmy Cain said, “Our goal is to create opportunities where every student can find a place to belong. These new programs give more students the chance to compete, build teamwork, and represent their school in meaningful ways.”
Blue Springs High School Activities Director Alan Hull added, “Both of these sports are gaining momentum at the state and national levels. By introducing them now, we’re giving students access to programs that align with opportunities they may pursue beyond high school.”
