Supportive Services

Course Descriptions

  • Supportive Services courses are provided for students, who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP), in order to advance appropriately toward attaining their annual IEP goal(s) and to earn credits toward graduation. The Career and Educational Planning Guide, the student’s IEP and advisement from teachers, counselors, and administrators are used to make decisions about courses.

A portion of this class will be reserved for guided study. The course is taught by special education staff and designed to provide specialized instruction on appropriate IEP goals as outlined in each student’s IEP.


    Career Preparation III

    This course is designed to focus upon developing skills needed to support students’ postsecondary goals. An emphasis will be placed upon IEP, self-disclosure, post-secondary options, soft-skills, independent living, and ACT prep. Transition assessments and activities in the areas of education/training, education, and independent living are given as a part of this course to identify student aptitudes, interests, skills, and needs. The course is taught by special education staff and designed to provide specialized instruction on appropriate IEP goals as outlined in each student’s IEP.


    Introduction to Careers (BSHS)

    This course is designed to explore various careers and develop the workplace skills students will need. Students will have the opportunity to research various careers of interest and investigate the skills needed specific to each career. Students will examine the job search process, interview practices, resumes, and applications. Formal and/or informal transition assessments may be given as a part of this course. The course is taught by special education staff and based upon alternate achievement standards. The course designed to provide specialized instruction on appropriate IEP goals as outlined in each student’s IEP.


    Light Industry Work Experience (BSHS)

    Beginning Work Experience

    This course is designed to provide the opportunity for Cooperative Work Experience in a competitive setting. Students must be clients of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, be currently employed in a paid, competitive setting, be released from school for a minimum of one hour per school day, and provide their own transportation. Goals of this course include the acquisition of general skills related to performing work under supervision, as well as job-related skills. The course is designed to provide specialized instruction on appropriate IEP goals as outlined in each student’s IEP.

    This course is organized around academic and postsecondary skills necessary for the student. Emphasis is on grade level vocabulary to support student participation in all subject areas. Areas to be addressed include: communication and language, self-advocacy, assistive technology, transition and organizational skills. This course is designed for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing that require a modified curriculum based on goals and services outlined in their IEP. The course is taught by special education staff and designed to provide specialized instruction on appropriate IEP goals as outlined in each student’s IEP.


    Communication & Language (VI)

    This course is organized around academic and postsecondary skills necessary for the student. Areas to be addressed include: assistive technology, Braille, self-advocacy, and organizational skills. This course is taught by special education staff and designed for students with visual impairment that require a modified curriculum and specialized instruction based on goals and services outlined in each student’s IEP.
