What Type of Poem May I Submit?

Enter any type of original poetry; however, please be aware that most formula poems such as limericks, cinquains, or definition poems do not usually win because they show little variety.

Judges tend to look for imagery, figurative language, originality, and meaningful topics in the selections for finalists.

How Do I Submit My Poem?

Please use the submission link unless you need ADA compliance assistance.

For ADA compliance please email sgough@bssd.net for a link with instructions.

Rules to Enter:

No more than two poems may be submitted. Each poem must be submitted separately.

The contest is open to all BSSD students in grades 6-12 and all BSSD staff.

Do not include pictures or graphics with your poem. No references to your name, your current teachers' names, or your building can be included in the poem. The poem must be your original work. Make sure your poem is titled and saved with the name of your poem (file name - name of your poem)

FINALISTS

Finalists are notified by April 5. Finalists are expected to read or perform their poems (or have a designated substitute do so) at a public reading to be held Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. at Blue Springs Central Office - 1801 NW Vesper. Exact placement of the winning poems will be announced throughout the evening, but not beforehand. A reception will follow the reading. Since scheduling can be a problem and conflicts do happen, please do not enter if you do not plan to try to attend the reading. Winning poems will be published in a booklet and will be submitted to the newspaper for possible publication.

Awards are given for each grade level, 6-12. A grand prize winner is announced for both the middle school and high school divisions.

  • High School Grand Prize Winner receives a book scholarship for college (seniors only) or a book award ($100)
  • Middle School Grand Prize Winner receives a book award of $50.
  • Teachers of the Grand Prize Winner will receive a book donation ($50) for their classrooms.
