Ms. Joy Scranton
I love being a teacher! For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. In second grade, my teacher helped me realize I did not want to be just any teacher, I wanted to be like her. I decided right then I would take the time to look past the outside of children to see what is in their hearts. This, along with instilling a love for learning, helping children interact with respect, and recognizing that all children can learn, has been a lifelong goal for me. Even after 28 years as I teacher, I believe I am one of the luckiest people I know because I get to come to school every day and do what I love!
I enjoy the opportunity to know where your child has come from and where he/she is going because I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th grade, along with two years as a mentor teacher where I worked with and helped new teachers as they started teaching. This will be my 13th year to work with the amazing students and staff at Voy Spears. In addition to the thrill of making a difference in the life of a child, I am humbled to have been selected as the 2010 Voy Spears Teacher of the Year and the 2004 Independence School District Teacher of the Year.
My wonderful husband, Tom, and I are the proud parents of amazing 7th grade twin daughters! Along with enjoying time with my family and friends, I enjoy singing, acting, traveling, live theater, organizing (yes, it’s true!) and reading out loud using fun voices.
Your child is truly a precious gift. I am honored to work with you to enhance your child’s growth this year. Please know I will support you and your child in any way I can, so your child will not only be successful, but develop a love for learning along the way. It will truly be a “DOT-tacular” year in the Scranton Family!
