William Bryant Construction Begins

As the winter months approach, construction projects made possible through the approval of the August 3 no tax rate increase bond are beginning to take shape. Ground was broken earlier this fall on several elementary school building upgrades, and as 2021 draws to a close these projects will begin to include concrete slabs, framework, and initial structures.

“In the next couple months, the elementary additions and renovations will be in the early stages with site work, dirt work, preparations, and early utility work, weather permitting,” said Assistant Superintendent of Operations Dr. Charlie Belt. “We can then move into concrete work and things such as mechanical systems, plumbing and pouring foundations between now and late January.”

The projects currently underway with an expected completion date of August 2022 are:

  • A multipurpose room capable of withstanding an EF5 tornado at Franklin Smith Elementary
  • Six additional classrooms and office expansion at James Lewis Elementary
  • Six additional classrooms at William Bryant Elementary
  • Additional parking and restrooms at James Walker Elementary
  • Four new classrooms at Chapel Lakes Elementary built to withstand an EF5 tornado
  • An expanded office area and new pick-up/drop-off driveway at John Nowlin Elementary.

At the secondary school level, Blue Springs High School will be repurposing a concession stand area to serve as additional food service space while the current kitchen/lunchroom area is remodeled. Early site work and demolition of the Civic Center will begin in January in preparation of construction on the new freshman addition at BSHS, set to open for the 2023-24 school year.
