Blue Springs School District library/media specialist Tara Pennington of Moreland Ridge Middle School has been named a Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year for Kansas City (Region 3). Pennington has worked in the BSSD for three years, two at MRMS. The Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year award is part of the Missouri Teacher of the Year program, sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The Missouri Teacher of the Year program recognizes the efforts of effective teachers in providing a quality education to their students. Preparing, developing and supporting effective educators is one of DESE’s primary goals. Pennington is eligible to compete for Missouri Teacher of the Year for 2017-18.
The Blue School District’s Board of Education received several honors at the Missouri School Boards’ Association 2017 MSBA Leadership Summit on June 3. The Board was one of 24 in the state to receive the 2017 Governance Team Award. This prestigious award is based on those school boards’ outstanding commitment to ongoing professional development in areas such as student achievement, school law and finance, board operations and contemporary issues in education. The award also recognizes their commitment to regional and statewide leadership and to active participation in legislative advocacy for public schools and the students they serve.
For the second straight year, the city of Blue Springs has been named the No. 1 best place for families to live according to Home Union, an online real state investment firm that ranks communities based on housing affordability and school quality.
Blue Springs and Blue Springs South High Schools celebrated the graduating classes of 2016-17 over the weekend at Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium. Blue Springs High School graduated 550 students from a class that earned $8 million in scholarships. Blue Springs South's graduating class of 498 students earned $7.5 million in scholarships.
Voy Spears, Jr. Elementary has been named a Gold Star School by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Voy Spears is one of eight schools in Missouri to receive the honor. The Gold Star Schools program was established by the Department in 1991 and aligns with the national Blue Ribbon Schools program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The Gold Star Schools program uses the same criteria for nomination as the National Blue Ribbon Schools program. Recipients of the State’s award were nominated for national Blue Ribbon recognition. Blue Ribbon Schools will be announced this fall by the U.S. Department of Education.
Schedules for the 2017-18 school year are not finalized until August 11 for elementary and middle schools, and registration/schedule pick up dates at the high school.
